Minnesota 4-H grows true leaders
In 4-H, young people build the skills they need for a lifetime - they learn and lead with the support of caring adults. In 2016-17, nearly 140,000 Minnesota youth and more than 22,000 adult volunteers took part in 4-H experiences. Our state report explains the impact of 4-H in Minnesota.
Where is 4-H?
4-H is offered throughout Minnesota in urban, suburban, tribal and rural communities. Find 4-H in your area.
What can I do in 4-H?
4-H'ers can design their own activities or take part in a structured one. In 4-H, young people learn by doing. This learning model teaches them life skills such as:
problem solving
decision making
coping
communicating
teamwork

What's a 4-H project?
4-H is all about project-based learning. It's like an a la carte menu - choose something you like and dive into it!
No matter where you are, 4-H offers project learning. Some local 4-H programs have committees, regular meeting nights and project learning workshops. Some don't.
Projects don't have defined groups or meetings. Local 4-H staff can connect you to resources and mentors to help you. If enough people have interest in a project, you can form a project club or event to dive deeper. In the summer, you can take your project to the fair!

What's a 4-H club?
Most 4-H'ers join a local club at some point. Clubs are fun, regular gatherings where they:
- Make friends
- Find help with their 4-H projects
- Find leadership opportunities
- Take part in culturally-specific activities and other activities and events
Clubs offer:
- Small-group learning
- Caring adult volunteer leaders who are screened, trained and guided by local University of Minnesota staff
- Grounding in research-backed curriculum and best practices for nonformal learning
- Support to help you dive deep into project learning
What happens in clubs? Will my friends be there?
Most clubs welcome anybody in kindergarten through one year past high school and interested in any project area. Youngsters in kindergarten through second grade join as Cloverbuds. Clubs may meet after school, in the evening or on the weekend. There are community clubs and local clubs for residents of one housing complex. There are clubs in every Minnesota county and two sovereign Indian nations. You may meet people you already know or a whole new set of friends.

Who manages clubs? Can I be a club leader?
Leading a club is one very important role that an adult volunteer can play. Club leaders don't work alone! All volunteers are screened, receive training & ongoing support from local Extension staff and have access to a wealth of online materials.

What are 4-H camps?
4-H camps are guided outdoor learning opportunities. Camp experiences include water recreation, arts & crafts, archery, team competitions, campfires and more.
Campers build critical life skills like confidence, independence and resiliency. We encourage you to sign up with friends and be open to building new relationships too.
All youth are welcome at 4-H camps. Grade requirements and activities vary.
4-H camp participants must enroll in 4-H—we'll tell you about that when you sign up for camp. Enrolling in 4-H opens up lots of learning opportunities.

Can I volunteer?
Yes, please! Adult volunteers make 4-H possible, because they lead most local programming. Volunteers are screened and receive ongoing training. Assisted by local staff, they guide youth learning using research-backed curriculum. In 2017, more than 11,000 adult volunteers gave more than a million hours of service to support the positive development of Minnesota's youth.
