wo were informed that two of the reasons
why a certain oil mill was not to he lo
cated at this place, bat lias been located
at Salem, were : that this city council bad
taxed the owners upon the property be
fore the machinery had reached Oregon.
Next, that the water power could not be
O had upon any terms favorable to the en
terprise. We were away from homo when
told thtjse things, and should not have
-credited the reports only that they eman
ated from a source which should be con
sidered reliable. We naturally enough
felt dl'igus!, to think such a stale of
things as that could exist. Upon return
ing to Oregon City we applied ourself to
inquiring into the matter, and f.umd that
great error exists somewhere. Mr. Cart
w right has either been deceived, or de
ceived hirn-elii The oil mill machinery,
Instead of being taxed by this council be-
fore it reached the StutewouId probably
have gone one or two years exempt from
taxation for city purposes. No assess
ment had been contemplated on the ma
chinery alluded K but the council have
in contemplation an ordinance to exempt
hitch property from taxation for a certain
period, in order to encourage capitalists to
invest here. As regards rumor No. 2, we
are informed by influential members of
the P. T. Company that they are so favor
able to encouraging enterprises of this na
ture that they are willing parlies should
take a lease or water power free, until
Kueh time as success is guaranteed to the
venture. Wo feel deep regret that Mr.
Cartwrighl's mill could not have been
erected in Oregon City, but we have satis
lied ourself that no obstacle existed here,
that could not have been averted.
SoMETinxa Substantial.-We were quite
amused on returning from Portland last
Tuesday, and meeting a friend who exhib
o ited some concern by reason of the report
that we were about to close up business.
The idea of us quitting business? There
is a better prospect of our soon branching
out on a larger scale! We are progress
ive, by nahiie! We like Oregon too well,
arid especially" this part of it, to pull up
stake and travel ! Wo didn't make our
money fur any stfHi purpose! If the right
hind d&an art-augment could be perfected
we fchouluhave no objection to consolidat
ing with the O. S. X. Co.. or the P. T. Co.,
no particular difference which, then we
guess nobody would .suppose we contem
plate leaving Oregon. We fell particu
larly disposed to make pome such arrang
iiienl.4 after the fourth of July. Peg your
pardon! but. sir ; v.e feel perfectly "able
to do so. On last Sabbath our better
half presented us with one of the finest
jtoys thatcan be scared up in this, or any
other Slate. Us leave Oregon ; No sir!
The baby weighed something over ten
pounds, lie is a fine appearing child, and
the mother is doing as well as could be
l$ied, under the circumstances. There
is something substantial about the little
fellow. Something to make us thankful
that we have cast our lot amongst Orogon
i.ms. its limbs are fully developed, its
form shapely and well proportioned. The
expression o foils lace is pleasant. It is
more bright and lively than infants ordi
narily are. at its age. If we only realize
all the kind wid.e .; bestowed upon the child,
itsn other, arid ourself, by the many who
have showered congratulations upon us.

Dav Dock?. A San Francisco telegram

launched their new floating dry dock, at
six o'clock. This work has been in pro
cess ot building the past year.7' About
tiie same hour the P. T. Company's dry
ijock in tins city was put into service, by
4-apt. George A. Pea-e. who run the Act
Me hi. The dock here now enables the
Company to get under their steamers of
he largest size in few moments time.

never saw half such an abundance of fruit
as we have now in Oregon. On last Sat
urday Maj. J. S. Kiiiearsen brought to
our ofiiee from a tree in his orchard.

Ga.s Woiucs. -We are informed that
Fnsley's Process for manufacturing gas is
about to be introduced into this citv. It

.the coming winter with gas. This, taken

is inaugurated.

city well deserves the name of an intrepid
commander, lie was tho first to steer a
boat into the-basin of the company at this

Wednesday evening stood at tho wheel of

hoat into the new drv dock.

on last Monday we made a mem. in our
book, of a choice lot of hides left at Mii-
waukie for the tannery cf Mr. Armstrong.
On reaching home, however, we found an
advertisement from him, which will be

the story better than wo could pen it.

Will our cotemporaries throughout the
State make a note of this fact. "We fre
quently get a good item from an advertisement.
Paixtinu. The new paint simp of Mr.
Murray, in the rear of tho store of Mr. J.
R. Ralston, is the most " attractive'' place
in this city. Mr. M. has decorated the
sides and doors with lettering of new and
artistic designs, determined that his place
of business shall be known. Tho word
Ka!.ominning is new to many Webster
defines it as being a superior kind of white
or colored paint for walls, and Mr. Mur
ray does it up according to the directions.
Concekt. On Wednesday evening last.
Rev. Mr. Sell wood, assisted by eight ladies
and seven gentlemen of his class, gare a
very entertaining concert of vocal musical
the Court II ouse in this city, to a full au
dience. Several of the singers met with a
resistless en core, and all left highly satis
fied. We hope the concert may be repeat
ed. Mr. Sellwood, as well as tho class,
deserve much praise for their efforts.
The Poxy. Reference is asked to the
new advertisement of Mr. James Mann, of
the Pony Saloon, Main street. If his place
was the Pony previous to this, it may now
well be considered a full grown horse, if
not a well mated double team, lie has
added a fine billiard table to his other ac
commodations for his friends and patrons.
Oregon Post Routes. Now that Mr.
Brooks is back again to look after matters
pertaining to the United Stales mails,
make your wants known. We are satisfied
that Mr. Brooks is disposed to do all that
is possible to place us in communication
willi all the towns in this county by lat
eral routes.
Pole Raxs-xg. A fine liberty pole, 150
feet in length, will be raised on the
grounds of the C. P. 13. Club, previous to
Thursday next, fro m which " the glorious,
old banner" will be flung to tho breeze.
Match to-Day. An interesting Match
Game of Paso Pall will be played to-day
commencing at 3 o'clock, between the
Benedicts and Bachelors of the Clackamas
Base Ball Club.

tlemen met together at the GILT House,
and enjoyed themselves; in tripping the
light fantastic toe.

city have closed running for the present,
