WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management (or WHU Vallendar) belongs to Germany's leading business schools with campuses in Vallendar and Düsseldorf, Germany. WHU was founded in 1984 by the Koblenz Chamber of Commerce.[1] WHU is the abbreviation of German Wissenschaftliche Hochschule für Unternehmensführung (English: academic institution of higher education for corporate management). The patron and main financier of the business school was the late billionaire and founder of the METRO Cash & Carry Group, Otto Beisheim.

WHU maintains a network of 204 partner universities worldwide, attracting exchange students from the US, Australia, China and many other countries, while also offering double degree programs with some partners such as University of Texas, Austin and the University of Western Australia.[2]

Currently, there are 1,452 students (including doctoral students) at WHU, about 183 employees and 52 professors (including junior professors).[3] The faculty includes the following centers: WHU Asia Center, Biopharma Management Center, Center for Collaborative Commerce, Center for Controlling & Management, Center for European Studies, Center of Asset and Wealth Management, Center for Sports and Management, Financial Accounting and Tax Center, Henkel Center for Consumer Goods, Center for Market-Oriented Corporate Management, Center for Responsible Leadership and Wipro Center for Business Resilience.[4]

Study programs

The Marienburg in Vallendar is the main building of WHU.

WHU offers the following programs. The language of instruction for the Bachelor's program is English or German, while all Master's programs are delivered entirely in English.[5]

  • Three-year Bachelor of Science Program (BSc) which includes two mandatory internships and one semester in one of WHU's international partner schools.

  • One-and-half year Master of Science in Management Program (MSc) consecutive to the Bachelor of Science program

  • One-and-half year Master of Science in Finance Program (MSc) consecutive to the Bachelor of Science program (started in 2013)

  • One-and-half year Master of Science in Entrepreneurship Program (MSc) consecutive to the Bachelor of Science program (started in 2017)

  • Full-Time MBA Program (including visiting studies at Kellogg School of Management – Northwestern University (USA), IIMB – Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and CEIBS – China Europe International Business School)

  • Part-Time MBA Program

  • The Kellogg-WHU Global Executive MBA Program in partnership with Kellogg School of Management – Northwestern University, Evanston/Chicago, Illinois, USA

  • Doctoral Program (students are awarded the German PhD equivalent Dr. rer. pol.)

  • Executive Education (customized programs for companies and open General Management programs)

Tuition and Selection Process

The tuition fee per academic year 2018/2019 for WHU Bachelor's students is €13,200 for those who are citizens of EEA countries and Switzerland, and €23,100 for citizens of non-EEA countries.[6] The tuition fee for the Master of Science in management, finance and entrepreneurship programs are 21,600€ for the 90 credit track and 26,800€ for the 120 credit track.[7] Scholarships, tuition waivers and financial aid schemes are available for some students.

The selection process for the undergraduate studies consists of two separate parts. Students are preselected according to their academic achievements or personal achievements and are offered a chance to compete for one of the roughly 200 seats per year at the final selection day. During that day, candidates have to hold presentations, talk to representatives of the private business sector and go through mathematical tests. Top applicants are then offered a place in the Bachelor of Science program. The acceptance rate of those offers ranges around 94%.[citation needed]

Accreditations

All WHU degree programs are recognized by the German state and accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). In addition, WHU is certified by accreditations from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and from the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).[8] Together with ESMT Berlin, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and the University of Mannheim WHU is one of four German business schools to hold both AACSB and EQUIS accreditations, although in contrast to the aforementioned universities, it does not hold the coveted Triple Crown.

Rankings

According to the Financial Times, WHU is currently ranked fourth overall in Germany, after ESCP Europe, Mannheim and ESMT Berlin.[9]

Its Master in Management Program ranked 7th worldwide and 2nd in Germany after ESCP Europe according to the Financial Times Master in Management Ranking 2017.[10]. In the same year, the program was ranked third worldwide by The Economist. [11]
The joint Kellogg-WHU Executive MBA Program made 1st place in Germany and 23rd worldwide in the Financial Times Executive MBA Ranking 2017.[12]
Furthermore, WHU was placed 3rd in Germany and 32nd in Europe in the overall Financial Times Business School Ranking 2016.[13]
According to the QS Global 200 MBA Ranking 2014/2015, WHU ranked third in Germany and 33rd in Europe.[14]
In the Economist 2015 ranking of EMBA programs, the joint Kellogg-WHU EMBA Program reached the 6th place overall.[15]
