罗伯特·洛佩兹生于纽约市曼哈顿格林威治村，具有菲律宾血统[1]。早年就对歌曲创作产生兴趣[2]。中学就读于 Hunter College High School，后来获得耶鲁大学的英语学士学位。

2003年他与作词人克里斯汀·安德生-洛佩兹结婚，育有两个女儿凱蒂（Katie）和安妮（Annie），她們都曾在《冰雪奇缘》中献声唱歌[3]。
