棕榈目是单子叶植物鸭跖草类分支下的一个目。本目曾经只有一科，即棕榈科。2016年发表的APG IV 分类法将曾经直接置于鸭跖草类分支下的多须草科放入本目，基于一些研究反映多须草科为棕榈科的姐妹群。[1]

棕榈目属于被子植物，是单子叶植物鸭跖草类的分支之一，与禾本目、姜目及鸭跖草目的亲缘关系最近。
