As of September 2017[update], there are two former Senators who are currently living, both from Class 1. The most recent Senator to die was Pete Domenici (1973–2009) of Class 2 on September 13, 2017. The most recent Class 1 Senator to die was Edwin L. Mechem (1962–1964) on November 27, 2002. The most recently serving Class 1 Senator to die was Joseph Montoya (1964–1977) on June 8, 1978.
